SUMI-CARD™ flexible flat cable

Sumitomo’s FFC brand — flat rectangular conductors laminated between insulation films for compact, dynamic interconnect.

SUMI-CARD™ is the Sumitomo brand name for flexible flat cable (FFC). In its basic form, flat rectangular conductors are laminated between two layers of electrical-grade insulation — a construction chosen to reduce wiring space while keeping conductors in a fixed pitch order.

SEPM’s Flat Component story repeatedly stresses thinner, finer-pitch innovations. A widely cited example is P0.5 SUMI-CARD™ — FFC with a 0.5 mm pitch for designs that cannot spare the room of coarser ribbons. Shielded SUMI-CARD™ appears for applications that need EMI control, such as signal cabling into scanners.

Construction building blocks

Selection is typically driven by connector pitch, flex cycle count, operating temperature, regulatory halogen preferences, and whether the signal path needs shielding.

Design notes for OEMs

When evaluating FFC against discrete wire or flexible PCB, start with fold geometry and connector landscape. Printer-head trailing cables remain a classic “why FFC” example: the ribbon can travel with a moving carriage while keeping many conductors aligned for a single connector mate. High-frequency grades matter when edge rates or crosstalk budgets push standard laminates past acceptable limits — confirm characteristic impedance and length guidelines with the manufacturer rather than guessing from brand names alone.

Halogen-free options respond to OEM substance policies common in consumer electronics and certain industrial programmes. High-temperature / high-humidity grades address tropical and enclosed chassis environments where condensation risk and elevated local temperatures collide — relevant in Malaysia’s climate and in sealed AV or game-console enclosures.
