Flat Component Division

SEPM’s Flat Component Division focuses on flexible flat cable (FFC) manufactured for simpler, more efficient wiring in computers and electronic devices — historically including DVD, CD, VTR, audio, office-automation equipment, and game consoles. These cables are commonly used for mass termination with connectors or for straightforward board-to-board links where round-wire harnesses would waste space.

The division’s flagship public brand is SUMI-CARD™: flat rectangular conductors sandwiched between electrical-grade insulation films. That geometry reduces wiring volume and supports dynamic motion — for example trailing cables that follow a printer head. As customers demanded thinner constructions and finer pitches, SEPM highlighted products such as 0.5 mm pitch SUMI-CARD™, plus shielded constructions for EMI-sensitive signal paths such as scanner cabling.

  • Board-to-board interconnect — short, ordered conductor arrays that keep pinouts aligned without bulky individual wires.

Jumper leads as a complementary geometry

Alongside laminated flat conductors, the division also produces jumper leads that use flexible round conductors. Archived descriptions emphasise high-temperature endurance, flame retardance, and long bending life — aided by constructions such as OM-1S, with a stainless-steel core surrounded by tin-plated copper wires. Jumper leads with flat rectangular conductors are also described, giving designers another route when round-wire flex behaviour is preferred over classic FFC laminate.

Why FFC still matters in 2026 product planning

Even as connectors and rigid-flex PCBs evolve, flat cable remains a practical middle ground: lower tooling cost than full rigid-flex in many cases, cleaner routing than discrete wire, and predictable pitch for automation.
