IRRAX™ irradiated wires
Cross-linked wire families for tougher thermal and mechanical demands — from IRRAX V2 and HF to B grades and high-voltage constructions.
IRRAX™ is Sumitomo’s brand family for irradiated (cross-linked) wires. Irradiation creates molecular cross-links in the insulation system, which typically improves heat resistance, abrasion behaviour, and dimensional stability under load compared with some thermoplastic-only materials at similar wall thicknesses.
SEPM’s Tebrau campus began device wire and IRRAX™ production with the M2 plant in 1995, according to published milestones — an early signal that irradiated wire was core to the site’s growth story, not a peripheral SKU.

- IRRAX V2 — lead-free constructions covering single and double insulation, with ratings spanning roughly 80°C / 30 V through 105°C / 300 V depending on UL style.
- IRRAX HF — halogen-free oriented style numbers historically listed across 30 V to 600 V classes and temperatures up to about 125°C on some rows.
- IRRAX B / B28 (non-PBDE type) — flame-retardant oriented constructions with elevated temperature and voltage combinations (including 125°C classes).
- IRRAX R9 — higher-temperature insulation wire historically marked around 200°C / 300 V.
- High-voltage wire — halogen-free and flexible HV options ranging into multi-kV DC/AC ratings for compact HV routing.
- Spiral shielded wire — IRRAX V2 and foamed IRRAX B insulated spiral-shield constructions for EMI control.
When designers reach for irradiation
Cross-linked wires are frequently chosen when continuous or intermittent temperatures challenge PVC, when thinner walls must still survive soldering-adjacent heat, or when flex and abrasion coexist in harness branches. Automotive-adjacent and high-voltage electronics programmes also benefit from insulation systems that hold shape near heat sinks and power modules.
Halogen-free IRRAX HF and HV options respond to OEM green procurement policies. Non-PBDE IRRAX B messaging on the archive reflects flame-retardant chemistry choices that avoid certain restricted brominated additives — still confirm current substance declarations (RoHS, REACH, customer blacklists) with SEPM for any live design.
Reading ratings without over-fitting
UL style numbers are necessary but not sufficient. A style may permit multiple constructions; your drawing must call out AWG, stranding, shield coverage, colour, and mark printing. Voltage ratings for high-voltage rows can list both DC and AC figures — do not conflate them when coordinating creepage and clearance on the PCB or chassis.
