What is SEPM? Malaysia interconnect plant overview
An independent introduction to Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products Malaysia — campus scale, products, and how it fits the Sumitomo Electric Group.
12 March 2026
SEPM is the common short name for Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products (M) Sdn. Bhd., a Johor Bahru manufacturing subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. of Japan. Public company materials date the Malaysia establishment to March 1988, initially for wire-harness production, with the current Tebrau Industrial Area 2 campus coming online for Flexible Flat Cable (FFC) in 1993.
Campus scale in plain numbers
Archived profile copy describes roughly 59,003 m² of land and 31,277 m² of built-up area across six factories (M1–M6), with about 906 employees. Those figures are useful for understanding SEPM as a substantial interconnect plant rather than a trading office: capacity for laminated FFC, irradiated wire, plating, and automotive-adjacent cable lines has been built in stages for more than three decades.
Two product pillars
- Flat Component Division — SUMI-CARD™ FFC, shielded and Au-plated options, fine pitches such as 0.5 mm, and jumper leads for dynamic routing.
- Electronic Wires Division — UL/CSA-recognised insulated electronic wires, flexible PVC families such as SUMIFLEX™, and IRRAX™ irradiated constructions including high-voltage and shielded variants.
Together those pillars answer a single industrial question: how do OEMs move many signals (or power) through shrinking chassis without chaotic wiring?
Why researchers land on SEPM
Malaysia’s electronics and automotive ecosystems make Johor a logical interconnect hub. SEPM’s published milestones — ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/TS 16949, OHSAS 18001, gold plating, HEV wire, steering cable — sketch a plant that matured from harness assembly into specialised interconnect manufacturing. Buyers evaluating Southeast Asian FFC or irradiated wire suppliers often start with public plants that already speak UL style numbers and automotive quality systems.
